The Heads Up Flight Desk was developed by a certified flight instructor and honors student at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.  While studying human factors in aviation safety, he noted that on virtually every airline flight deck you would find a yoke mounted chart desk (see examples at left).  The reason for the board being mounted there is to keep important information in the normal field of view for the pilot.  Having to look down and away from this normal field of view is recognized as being a hazard to flight, because it takes the pilot’s eyes away from scanning either the instruments or outside the aircraft for conflicting traffic.

This innovative product for general aviation is a great safety enhancer.  You will find it convenient for keeping important documents in view, such as instrument approach plates, airport diagrams and flight logs.  As an additional safety enhancer, we imprinted important safety briefing items on the surface of the desk.  Included are a passenger briefing, crew briefing, engine failure during takeoff briefing, engine failure in flight memory items, and a pre-landing checklist.

General aviation pilots haven’t had an affordable yet durable means of keeping important documents in their normal field of view, until now.  The Heads Up Flight Desk is a top quality safety enhancing device that puts you in the same league as professional airline crews.  Considering that the average general aviation pilot is the entire flight crew on his/her airplane, we need all the help we can get.  Get one of these today!

“After 30 years of airline flying, I’m pretty spoiled when it comes to having a place to write and clip charts.  Knee boards just don’t cut it.”

CUSTOMER COMMENTS:

Why use a white LED?

“Red light distorts colors, especially on aeronautical charts, and makes it very difficult for the eyes to focus on objects inside the aircraft.  Pilots should use it only where optimum outside night vision capability is necessary. White cockpit lighting should be available when needed for map and instrument reading, especially under IMC conditions.”
